All emotional distress needs to be processed, i.e. comforted and discharged. Children's brains are not developed enough to do that on their own. They need their caregivers to provide that emotional comfort and support for them. If a child does not get adequate emotional support from his or her caregivers, that emotional distress gets repressed. Too much repressed distress from childhood leads to a poorly functioning mind in adulthood and a negative, insecure sense of self --- which leads to all sorts of emotional problems in adulthood including depression, anxiety, addictions, emotional instability, impaired relationships, and various other disordered behavior. These issues worsen with time. Time does not heal such wounds.
The purpose of counseling is to detect and heal those repressed, subconscious emotional wounds in order to achieve a secure sense of self and resulting consistent, reliable peace, joy, and happiness.
