Unmet emotional needs in childhood is the primary cause of emotional issues in adulthood.
All emotional distress needs to be processed. That is, it needs to be comforted and discharged. Children's brains are not developed enough to comfort their own emotional distress. They need adult caregivers to provide that emotional comfort and support for them. If a child does not get adequate emotional support from his or her caregivers, that emotional distress gets repressed. Too much repressed distress from childhood leads to a poorly functioning mind in adulthood and a negative, insecure sense of self --- which leads to a wide range of emotional problems in adulthood including depression, anxiety, addictions, emotional instability, impaired relationships, and various other disordered behavior. These issues worsen with time. Time does not heal such wounds.
The purpose of counseling is to identify and heal those repressed, subconscious emotional wounds that originated in childhood in order to achieve a stable, secure sense of self and the resulting consistent, reliable peace, joy, and happiness.
